The 1915 Canakkale Bridge and Motorway Project is a total of 88 kilometers long between Malkara and Çanakkale and is developed by the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications General Directorate of Highways. The most important part of the project is the 4.6 kilometer 1915 Dardanelles Bridge, which will be the world's longest suspension bridge with a 2023-meter long span. The project is being realized by the Build-Operate-Transfer model is undertaken by Daelim, Limak, SK Engineering & Construction and Yapı Merkezi companies.

Within the scope of the project, an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) process is being carried out in accordance with international standards, in particular Equator Principles, IFC Performance Standards and Garanti BBVA Bank Sustainability Policy. The ESIA Report became final in March 2018. In this study, the positive and negative environmental and social effects of the Project have been determined and the applications that will increase the positive effects and remove the negative effects have been determined. Some of these applications are listed below:

  • For each tree to be affected within the scope of the project, 5 trees will be planted to the nearest zones.

  • Throughout the route, onshore and offshore geophysical and geotechnical studies are carried out and the risks (unexploded mines, archaeological finds etc.) that may be found underground are determined in advance and necessary precautions are taken.

  • During noisy sea works in the Dardanelles, experts will observe marine mammals and construction methods will be carried out in such a way that they will not harm the environment.

  • A detailed noise monitoring and modeling work will be carried out along the project route to keep the noise levels below the standards with measures such as landscape, noise barriers, asphalt type change where noise limits are likely to be exceeded.

  • A Community Level Assistance Program will be implemented to improve the socio-economic status of the settlements located near the project and the provision of education, consultancy and equipment support to the people of the region will be provided.

  • A transparent communication policy will be followed at all stages of the project and the community and all stakeholders will be informed about the construction and operation activities. A Grievance Mechanism is established and being implemented to manage the queries and grievance.
